It all depends on how you intend to use the program. I would say that they majority of the Illustrator users are not taking full advantage of its mind-blowing capabilities. Therefore, Inkscape is significantly closer to Illustrator than GIMP is to Photoshop.

Having said that, it is clear that the generations that have grown up using Photoshop and Illustrator will seriously struggle with the switch. I am very impressed by <a href="http://www.code-corner.com" rel="nofollow">code-corner</a>'s philosophy, it's very refreshing to see professionals pushing for open-source technologies. However, if they were more focused on graphical elements, or websites with a strong front-end aspect, I'm not sure if they would be able to survive exclusively on the Penguin.

Therefore, the switch is costly (in terms of time and energy), but it is absolutely worth while.

nice post ya shabbles. really informative as always. I'm very curious about the GIMP and PS divide. I was happily surprised to learn this summer that code-corner now only uses GIMP exclusively and when i asked if i could use PS on their computers I was turned away because they only run linux software. And personally, although I'm running Ubuntu now, one of the main reasons I didn't rid myself entirely of windows is to use photoshop and so on. But it is perhaps time to make the switch to GIMP and start the slow process of getting used to it.

Am very curious what you think of Inkskape and it's equivalents in comparison to Illustrator are they at the same level as GIMP compared to Photoshop?
